Darrell Jones conducted a one-week creative/technical developmental residency at Danspace in January 2015, towards creation of his new work, “The Original Lovely.” Darrell and his collaborators (performers Damon Green and J’Sun Howard and sound designer/DJ Justin Mitchell a/k/a/DJ Swaguerilla) arrived in New York January 8, 2015, just before the annual Arts Presenters conference and the start of the Danspace 2015 Winter season. They offered a Danspace “salon” event–facilitated/contextualized selections from work on Saturday afternoon, January 10, in the Parish Hall for a small audience of artists, arts activists and Danspace staffers. Monday morning, Darrell paid a courtesy visit to the DanceForce at its semi-annual meeting at the Mertz-Gilmore foundation. Darrell and his collaborators began to work in earnest in the sanctuary space Monday through Saturday, January 12-17. (Danspace’s in-kind role was to make the space and technical assistance available to the artistic team.) Darrell brought his sound technician to New York because they decided to concentrate on the “sonic design” of the new work. The residency was capped by a small invitational showing on Saturday, January 17.
