Kaatsbaan UpStream® Residency Awards are designed to support all stages of professional dance development through 1 to 2 week residencies at Kaatsbaan.
Residencies are an effective way to build the art form by providing time and space for creating new choreography, rehearsing repertory, building productions, showcasing works in progress, and presenting finished performances. The UpStream® program is open to all professional choreographers and dance companies who seek a residency for these goals.
All dance styles and projects of any size will be considered with no specific requirements for artistic content. The selection process will focus on the specific need for large studio space and comprehensive residency time. Professionalism is a high priority and artists are expected to utilize the facilities and their time by working full days during the residency.
Building on the past success of the UpStream® program, Kaatsbaan will offer 5 residencies for the 2019-2020 season.
The selection process will begin in June 2019 with a short on-line application available on the Kaatsbaan web-site. DanceForce member and Kaatsbaan’s Co-founder/Artistic Director Gregory Cary will make the final selection from applications and videos links received.
Selected artists will be given full use of the Studio Complex at Kaatsbaan. One large studio will be available at all times as well as housing for all company members at the Dancers’ Inn. Kitchen facilities are available in the Gatehouse. Space for site-specific works will be accommodated. $500 will be given to each company to assist with transportation and expenses.
Each artist or company will performs on the final Sunday of their residency in the Kaatsbaan 160-seat black box theater. Performances can be showcases or fully produced productions as per artist’s needs. Open rehearsals and master classes will be scheduled as requested.
Performances will be promoted to a mailing list of 7,500 e-mails, 5,000 print mailings, through media ads to a 4-county region, and on social media. Ticket prices will be subsidized to serve economic diverse populations, $10 reserved adult seating, $5 students and children. As a means to expand rural audiences 20 seats to each performance will be donated to the Tivoli Library. These are distributed to Tivoli residents for a $5 donation to the library educational fund. The Village of Tivoli promotes the residences through their social media. 3 open rehearsals will be offered to the public free of charge and seniors from the Bard College Lifetime Learning Institute will attend.
Generally, over 40 applications are received each year. For the 2019-2020 season residencies have been awarded to Lauren Post’s emerging ballet project Co-Lab, Christopher Rudd/RudduR Dance, and VIVO Ballet/Artistic Director Enzo Celli. Vivo Ballet is based in NYC and Rome, Italy. 2 additional artist/companies will be selected in a second round with a June 1, 2019 application deadline.
